There are many weekends with hiking in the territory of Alentejo, always attended by residents in Portugal, Portuguese or foreign.

These weekends are a fantastic opportunity to make a short break and come to know the Alentejo as hiking destination.

Being in Monsaraz is almost like touching the sky. High on top of its more than three hundred metre altitude, it dominates the surrounding plain and ensures the best views of Lake Alqueva, which almost reaches the base of its rock mass. A location of great landscapes, this village was throughout time chosen by different peoples as a place of dwelling and defence, giving rise to a walled set that marks the skyline and defines the history of the region.

The town of Mourão is a real treasure on the edge of Lake Alqueva. Strongly marked by the Guadiana River, today it has an idyllic setting with waters as far as the eye can see and old paths and roads immersing themselves in the placid blue of the calm waters. The hills and old walls now make amazing cut-outs for walking and discovering new landscapes at every moment, topped off by a beautifully preserved historic centre and a castle that takes us back in time.

When in Grandola, we gaze at a sea of green as far as the eye can see, full of oak trees that are a common in all Alentejo. Its natural reserve is often related to highly qualified ecological systems. Its terrain is somewhat wavy, but this just helps in creating a landscape that will take your breath away, either by looking at the hills or waterways that have passed close by. In older times, all these hills were populated by simple farmers.

This is a plain terrirory that is marked by gorgeous limestone mountains, this moutain being Serra de São Miguel that, on top, there is a bull square and an abandoned sanctuary. From the top, you can see an horizon that never seems to end, and it gives anyone a chance to gaze at Alentejo's purest form.

The São Domingos mine contains a unique knowledge mystical and life force, where, through the mining activity, a very particular form of social organization was built. In contrast with the aridity of the mining area, we can find the relaxing green landscape of Tapada Grande, the gentle fields of grain and flowers, the carob plantations, the majestic stone peaks and the abandoned hills of the Alentejo, built in rammed earth and adobe, which take us back to ancestral knowledge.

In Serpa we find a territory historically marked by the direct relation with the river Guadiana and geographical location on the border with Spain. It is the Alentejo of large agricultural fields and rural estates, which were once considered the breadbasket of Portugal, such was the quantity of grain then produced, which fed the watermills of Guadiana, the great road of the South of the country, where they would be wisely transformed into valuable flour.

This is the part of Alentejo that has water all round, a space of transition between montains and plains. This part of Alentejo has a great importance to the protection of the ecosystem and the protection of its rich biodiversity. This land has a great collection of megalitic structures, and it varies with each step you take. Eventually there will come a time where you are walking in an abandoned railway, which at the time, was incredibly important.

Alvito is equivalent of being in the heart of Alentejo in a geographical sense. Its considered the heart because of the autenticity of the historical heretage and rural landscapes full of agricultural potential. Witnesses of a past cereal plantation are the almost infinite windmills, which give this trail its own theme.

This territory is marked for its easy-on-the-eye landscape, where time flows in its own rhythm. Legend has it that, in the 5th Century, a couragous woman defended the Singa City from invaders. Today, it is surrounded by fertile grounds full of wine productions that mold most of the landscape.

With traces common to the Estrela Basilica in Lisbon, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Aires is an excellent example of the Baroque Rural, built from an old hermitage of the 16th century. Passage point of the old roads to Santiago de Compostela and cattle transhumance routes, is associated with the promise of freedom from a great epidemic, which graced the region in the mid-eighteenth century. The territory covered, with centuries-old olive groves on the surface of abandoned quarries, the beautiful green marble of Viana, as well as the visit to the historic center of Viana do Alentejo.

We are in the territory os small vineyards built from the experiences of older generations of friars. They are protected from north winds because os the Portel and Mendro mountains. The soil is extremely fertile and it has endured all this time and has become an important part of the regions heretage. After the Romans, in came the knowledge that, to this day, still weights enormous importance and have influenced the best production of quality olive oil and orange plantations.

This Central Alentejo, very close from Évora, was the birthplace of so many civilizations. Here we find the vestiges of distant past that refer us to prehistory where we can find what is considered the oldest monument of humanity and the largest dolmen of Portugal, where our ancestors bade farewell to their dead in so different cults of our days.
In the middle of the montado woods we find the perfect cross between the history and the myth where remains medieval castles from past heroes of the Christian reconquest from Évora to the Moors.

An immense territory that was once the Headquarters for the Ordem do Hospital, today being the Ordem de Malta, feudal lands from the Alvares Pereira, which later gave Portugal a significant part of its history. Between legends of mortal love and secular defences in castels, we have fertile lands and disperce population, although the landscape was once heavily populated.

Arriving at Vila da Seda is like diving in the best of worlds, with incredible views and with an extensive historical culture, its hard not to find something that you've seen before. Being a forward operating line of defence, with its castle that dominated the landscape, it turned into a village completly surrounded by its walls, crossed by a magnificent Roman Bridge of Vila Formosa.

We can find a perfect balance between nature and culture in Avis, with a lagoon dividing itself on huge arms full of calm and relaxing waters and a landscape as far as the eye can see. The encounter with history happens since millenia ago, but its beauty set itself once upon a time, when the Ordem de Avis came to be by the hands of Portugal's king at the time, D. João I.

This is the infamous islamic Al-lustre from the arabic implementation of the territory. The sole is full of reflective cristals and stones that come from its mining activities, explored millenia ago. Aljustrel has a huge field of cereal, surrounded by centinary trees and cut by discreet waterways, completly forgotten by most because the horizon clouds anyone's thoughts.
